Two Crashes in the County

It was a beautiful day for a drive in the County for many yesterday…..but, Prince Edward OPP were called out to a couple of crashes. Highway-62 was closed at County Road-1 near Bloomfield after a two crash at 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon. No one was seriously injured but the occupants were taken to hospital for treatment.

There was also an accident later in the afternoon when a motorcycle ran into the back of a transport truck near the Canadian Store in Picton. The biker was treated for a broken leg.


Brighton Considers New Development

There’s a special Council meeting this evening in the Municipality of Brighton. Council will consider re zoning property to allow for the building of 40 houses on hilly land behind Pearsall Motors. The sub division, by Henderson Developers, already has draft plan approval. Some nearby residents worry about soil erosion from the development. That meeting starts this evening at 6;30 at the municipal office in Brighton.


Quinte Conservation Appeals to OMB

Quinte Conservation has appealed a severance approved by a Belleville committee to the Ontario Municipal Board.

The committee of adjustment allowed the severance so a couple on Mudcat Road could build a new home on their property.

However, Quinte Conservation General Manager Terry Murphy says the limestock rock has caves and crevices underneath, and can’t support new development or proper septic systems. No date has yet been set for the Ontario Municipal Board hearing.


Moira Lake Beach Boardwalk?

Big plans for the future of the Kiwanis Club boat launch area on Moira Lake in Centre Hastings. Centre Hastings Council is applying to the Ministry of Natural Resources to allow changes to how close to 6 acres of land is used at the boat launch. Deputy Reeve Tom Simpson says they want to possibly expand the beach and add a boardwalk. Grants are being applied for, and fund-raising will begin on the 100 thousand dollar project. Residents around Moira Lake will be asked what facilities they’d like to see at the Kiwanis boat launch.


$60,000 Raised at Belleville MS Walk

Sixty thousand dollars raised in yesterday’s walk for Multiple Sclerosis. 300 walkers took to the track at Moira Secondary School for the annual event yesterday morning. Half of the funds raised support local MS patients and the other half is used for research.


Quinte West Bridge Repairs

Motorists used to taking Old Highway Two between Trenton and Brighton will have to make alternate arrangements for the next two weeks.

Quinte West Public Works has closed the road between Wooler Road and Experimental Farm Road to complete the east and west approaches to the new Bridge, which will open soon.

The detour route is Wooler Road to Telephone Road, then to Christiani and Experimental Farm Roads, and back to Old Highway Two. Only local traffic will be allowed to use the road from Wooler Road to Bolton Road.


Hundreds flock to Crystal Palace for Terroir

It was a bigger crowd than last year at Terroir.

The Prince Edward County Winegrowers’ Association held its annual wine and food show at the Crystal Palace yesterday (SAT).

Event chair, Sally Peck, says about 475 wine and food lovers befell the Picton venue for the event, which featured local wineries and restaurants as well as speakers on topics like wine and cheese.

Peck says any proceeds of the event will go toward PECWA activities, such as educating and marketing to the public.

Heritage Designations in Prince Edward

Prince Edward County Council is working toward designating 3 more properties as being of heritage value.

They are Mrs. Furlong’s store at 64 Union Street in Picton, the Washburn House at 393 Main Street, Picton, and the Rose House on County Road 8.


Quinte West RIDE: no charges

O-P-P checked four locations for liquor licence infractions. Police say no violations were recorded.

O-P-P set up a RIDE programme on Wallbridge-Loyalist Rd. around midnight and checked 125 vehicles. Police say no violations were issued.


401 now open:charges pending

Weekend travellers will be relieved to find highway 401 has reopened after being closed for several hours.

Northumberland O-P-P say a Toronto man is in serious condiation in a Kingston hospital following a collision at 1:30 this morning (SUN).

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of the 401 near Brighton.

Witnesses reported to police an erratic driver who eventually struck the centre median, rolled over and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

The highway was closed for three hours for the police investigation… and emergency crews had to removed the trapped driver. A passenger was also treated for minor injuries.

Police say charges are pending.
