3 Vehicle Accident in Bayside

A woman has been charged with careless driving following a three-vehicle accident in Bayside.

Quinte West OPP say traffic slowed for a school bus on Old Highway Two near Aikins Road yesterday afternoon, when a vehicle rear ended another, pushing it into another car. Two of the vehicles had to be towed away because of the extent of damage. The charged person, whose name wasn’t released, was treated at Trenton Hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

Trenton Man Apologizes for Standoff

A Trenton man at the centre of a standoff nearly a week ago is apologizing to his neighbors for wasting their time. 28-year-old Brian Tremblay tells the Trentonian he drank a 26-ouncer of whiskey, last Thursday afternoon, and doesn’t remember anything about the two-hour standoff with police at his Richard Street home. No charges were laid against Tremblay and he was released from the hospital yesterday morning. He tells the paper he hadn’t had a drink in five years and is sorry his bad decision affected so many people. He says he was tasered by OPP officers who subdued him but wasn’t conscious of what was happening.

Jail and Bail for Oncology Unit

If you’re ever stuck in jail, you might want to call the Chair of the BGH Foundation. Ross McDougall raised over a thousand dollars in yesterday’s Jail and Bail fundraiser event for the hospital’s oncology unit at Loyalist College. Big timers like Mayors Neil Ellis and John Williams were sent to the slammer by Community Policing Officers to face charges like, not buying enough flowers for their secretaries and, Police Chief Cory McMullen was locked up for being stingy on the Timmy’s supply. The event organized by three Loyalist Public Relations students, raised a total of 35-hundred dollars. This is the first time the event was held, and Student Adviser and Professor, Kerry Ramsay, says it’s success will bring it back next spring.

Architect Put on Hold

Plans to hire an architect to design the new Joint Belleville-Hastings County archives facility have been put on hold.

It was the plan to hire an archivist for the joint facility that got stuck at belleville city council for a few weeks, but officials are now pouring over a number of applicants for that position. Since the hiring of an architect is on hold, Councillor Garnet Thompson says, in-house staff will do some initial design work, then an architect may be hired in the fall to complete the work. Meanwhile, Thompson says, the “archivist” for the facility will be hired by the end of May.

Tax Increase & No More Free Dump Days in PEC

Prince Edward County Council has settled on it’s budget for this year.

County staff had brought in a proposed budget featuring a 4 and a quarter percent increase but, Mayor Leo Finnegan, says Council managed to lower that figure a bit. He says, “the way we’ve ended up (is) with a 3.19% tax increase. It’s taken a lot of talk, a lot of meetings and a lot of discussion, but I’m satisfied with that.”

Council decided to cancel free dump days, and close 2 landfill sites as part of several cutbacks to bring the increase down.  It’s not known yet which dumps will be closed.  The increase will mean a homeowner with a house worth 250 thousand dollars will pay another 80 dollars a year in local taxes.

Hastings-Quinte Hopes for some Clot-busting Results

Nine emergency paramedic services in Eastern Ontario, including Hastings-Quinte, are conducting a study that could increase life-saving chances for stroke patients.

It has to do with whether or not a stroke patient is taken to the closest hospital first; or “directly” to a stroke centre to get the special “clot-busting” drug. The study will determine whether or not the length of time allowed to get the patient to hospital will be extended, thereby getting more stroke victims to the special centres. Doug Socha of the Hastings-Quinte EMS, lead paramedic on the study, is optimistic. Socha hopes for some results in the study in about six months.
