Retired Principal
Canadian Arcott Sheep Breeder
Art lover
We are saddened to share the news of Stanley Elwood Palmateer’s passing on February 23, 2026, at the age of 89. Elwood was the beloved husband of the late Barbara Florence Palmateer (née Thrasher). Son of the late Stanley and Beatrice Palmateer, Elwood was also predeceased by his cherished sister Aileen, brother-in-law Richard Batten, and nephew Andrew Batten.
Elwood will be remembered by his sons Christopher (Loretta), Matthew, and Michael, his grandchildren Megan and Stanley, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald (Donnie) and Norma Thrasher, his nieces and nephew.
Elwood was a graduate of the Ontario Teachers College and Queens University. He retired as a Principal with the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board. He loved to share stories of the year he and Barb spent teaching in Scotland while living in Penkill Castle. Even in retirement he was always teaching and many of his former students and staff still remember those exciting and memorable days spent at Bark Lake Outdoor Education Centre and the various special activity days.
He was an avid sheep farmer, former member of the Hastings Stewardship Council, and a collector of art including some by William Bell Scott. Each summer he could be seen driving his 1973 Volkswagen beetle convertible with a trusty dog in the passenger seat.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Karen Cannon for her support, care, and companionship. Many thanks to the doctors and staff at Moira Place Long Term Care in Tweed for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Elwood.
In keeping with Elwood’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the care of the Burke Funeral Home, 150 Church Street, Belleville, ON, (613) 968-6968.
A celebration of both Barb and Elwood’s lives will be held at the Tweed Hungerford Agricultural Building 617 Louisa St. Tweed, Ontario on Sunday, April 19, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Municipality of Tweed for the Erin Palmateer Pool, the Tweed and Area Heritage Society or the Diabetes Association. Condolences may be shared online with the family at www.burkefuneral.ca
