It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Richard (Nick) Nickerson on April 25th, 2026, at the Belleville General Hospital, Belleville, ON, at the age of seventy-six.
Richard was born in Liverpool, Queen’s County, NS. He was the second son of the late Charles and Harriet (Huskins) Nickerson.
Richard was a strong believer in family, friends, and Country. He was a loving husband to Joyce, and a devoted father to his son Richard (Rich). He was especially proud of his son, Rich, who has his own family with daughter-in-law Megan (Quinn) and their three children Kate, Blake, and Taylor. He enjoyed family time and watching the escapades of his granddaughters. He had a front-row seat as he and Joyce moved right next door.
Nick spent the first 18 years of his life in Port Mouton, NS. He would reminisce of family picnics at the beaches, spending time with high school friends, living with his grandparents for a brief time in his early years and telling stories of growing up with his siblings on the South Shore. He was the loving brother of the late Russell (Sheila), Leslie (Betty), and sister Laura (Wayne) Cranton, and living brothers Sterling (Cheryl), Keith (Donna), and Bentley (Stephanie).
Nick joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1967 as a Refinisher. He served in Greenwood, Ottawa, Summerside, Trenton and did a United Nations tour in Egypt. He was a member of the team that traveled to Norway to recover the Halifax NA337 bomber, now exhibited at the RCAF Memorial Museum at CFB Trenton. Nick formed lasting friendships during his military service. He wore the Air Force uniform with pride. He retired at the rank of Warrant Officer; but, continued to serve his fellow veterans by joining the Legion and holding officer positions. He especially enjoyed the comradeship. He was a good soldier and believed in Service to Country.
During his lifetime Nick enjoyed camping, fishing, carpentry, four-wheeling, attending Rich’s sport activities, and being with Joyce. Together they travelled, shared time with good friends, enjoyed the military life and retired to a quiet life. He held a special place for his extended family of Sherry and Peter, Dolly and Ken, Terry and Heather, Vicki and Dan, and recent friends Paul and Danny. He would want us to know he cared and spoiled the animals that were part of the family. One of his last words were ‘take care of Big Boy.’
His friends and a large extended family—such as sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and their families—hold his memory dear.
Nick is at peace now. He made his final journey to join his mom and dad, brothers, and sister.
Burke Funeral Home in Belleville, ON has overseen the cremation, and a Celebration of Life will be organized for close family members and friends.
Donations can be made to the CNIB’s dog training program or the Belleville Humane Society.
