Richard “Dick” Hurst
October 23, 1939 – June 13, 2026
Dick, aka “the great RW” Hurst spent 86 years making people laugh, stirring the pot, and occasionally getting into trouble which he was quite happy to be part of.
Richard “Dick” Hurst passed away on June 13, 2026, in his 87th year, after a life fully devoted to family, community, friendships, and finding the fun in almost every situation.
Born and raised in Belleville and Tweed, Dick was proud of his roots and the communities that helped shape him. To many, he was simply “Mr. BCI”, a larger-than-life character whose impact stretched far beyond the places he worked, played, and called home.
Dick never met a stranger, only future friends, teammates, and the occasional partner in crime. Armed with quick wit and an offside sense of humour, he kept everyone on their toes. No one was safe from receiving one of his legendary, unflattering nicknames. All were given with affection. If Dick gave you a nickname, you knew you had earned a special place in his life.
If there was fun to be had, he was already there. If there was trouble brewing, chances are he helped organize it. As a lifelong master of shenanigans he viewed rules more as suggestions rather than requirements. Dick had a gift for lifting spirits and reminding everyone not to take themselves too seriously.
Athletics were one of his great passions. Dick proudly played football at the University of Guelph, a chapter of his life he often reminisced about. He later coached his own children and countless young athletes, passing along confidence, encouragement, and the importance of believing in yourself.
His grandchildren were among his greatest joys. “Poppa” was their loudest supporter, biggest fan, and most enthusiastic cheerleader. Whether it was sports, performances, or everyday life, he showed up. He encouraged, entertained, offered plenty of unsolicited commentary, and usually found a way to get a laugh when it was least expected.
A proud member of the Belleville men’s barbershop singing group, Dick loved performing and entertaining. He was also a dedicated member of the Kiwanis Club and played an instrumental role in fundraising for the Dick Ellis Arena, reflecting his commitment to bringing people together and strengthening the community he loved.
Dick had a soft spot for underdogs, a deep compassion for those facing hardship, and a special affection for animals. He was always willing to lend a hand, offer support, or quietly help someone in need.
Professionally, Dick was a salesman, but what he really sold were relationships. He had a way of turning customers into friends, and friends into lifelong connections.
Dick was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Louise Hurst; his sister, Josephine Croft (Ron); and his treasured son, Chimo the family dog who occupied a particularly important place in his heart.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Judy; his daughters Jennifer Hurst Fraser (Scott) and their children Evan (Nicole) and Carson; Melanie Feasby (Scott) and their children Brooklynn (Parker) and Kennedy; and Sarah Hurst (Amey). He is also survived by his brothers James Hurst (Joanne) and David Hurst (Ilona); sisters – in – law Bonnie (Ted) Little and Pat (Peter) Cassidy, as well as many nieces, nephews, neighbours, and lifelong friends.
Those who knew Dick can take comfort imagining the reunion taking place in Heaven right now. The laughter is a little louder, the stories a little taller, and the shenanigans well underway.
Dick’s legacy will not be measured by titles, possessions, or achievements, but by the joy he spread, the people he encouraged, the underdogs he championed, the friendships he built, and the smiles he left behind.
After 60 years of marriage, Dick finally suspected Judy’s patience might not be endless. Rather than put that theory to the test, he decided it was time to bow out gracefully.
Dad, here’s hoping in your next chapter there will be an unlimited supply of Hawkins Cheezies, endless glasses of coke filled with ice and there’s a “Golden Pond” that actually holds water…..possibly even some fish.
“Cheers to the CNE!”
