BIRD, JOHN – Passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 5, 2025, in his 87th year. Born November 21, 1938, in Belleville, Ontario, son of the late John (Jack) and Pearl (Keech).
Beloved husband of Mary Lou (Denyes) for 58 years. Proud father of Tim, Stephen (predeceased), and Tony (Andrea). Cherished “number one fan” of his grandsons Owen and Griffin.
John was a prominent general contractor and one of the community’s most talented carpenters for 49 years. He owned and operated John W. Bird Construction Ltd., leaving lasting contributions to the Quinte region through the hundreds of projects he passionately crafted. John’s life was built around his work and family. He had outstanding employees over the years, however his fondest work memories were mentoring and working shoulder to shoulder with his son Tim and cousin Bob.
He held happy memories of summers with family at their Old Orchard Road cottage on the Bay of Quinte. John was forever grateful to his Uncle Wilson, Aunt Annie and Uncle Charlie for their contributions to his childhood.
An avid hockey fan, John was a familiar face in the stands of the Memorial Arena cheering for the McFarlands, Bobcats, and Belleville Minor Hockey. For decades he was a proud season ticket holder for the Belleville Bulls – though his favourite players were always his son Tony and grandsons Owen and Griffin. His happy place was behind the wheel of his 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass enjoying the fall colours with Mary Lou by his side, while following his wonderful friends Don and Audrey Hackett.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Azizy, Dr. Wood, and Dr. Kankesan for their exceptional care.
In keeping with John’s love of a good chat over a coffee and dessert, a casual Celebration of Life will be held in his honour on Saturday, October 11, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Burke Funeral Home, 150 Church St. Belleville, ON. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Quinte Health’s Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Clinic
