With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Ross Stone on January 3, 2026. He was born on October 24, 1947.
Jim was a devoted and loving husband to Lynn Stone, and a proud father to his sons, Mike Stone (Becky) and Graham Stone (Nancy). His greatest joy was being Poppa to his beloved grandchildren, Charlotte, Jack, and Lochlan. Jim was a constant and steady presence in their lives, rarely missing a game, performance, or milestone. His encouragement, pride, and deep love for his family were evident to everyone who knew him.
Jim enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an educator with the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, retiring after 35 years of dedicated service. Beyond the classroom, he was deeply committed to the sport of basketball, spending more than 40 years as a referee with the Ontario Association of Basketball Officials (OABO). Officiating high school, college, and adult league games, Jim earned lasting respect for his fairness, professionalism, and genuine love of the game.
When he wasn’t refereeing basketball, Jim could often be found on the Bay of Quinte Golf Course, enjoying time with the league and the friendships he built there. He cherished those many hours on the course, always ready to share stories from his years as an educator, father, and grandfather.
Jim was the beloved son of Leila Stone of Uxbridge and was predeceased by his father, Ross Stone. He was a dear brother to Bryan Stone (Gail) and Glen Stone (Lynn), and a cherished uncle who will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Jim will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his generosity with his time, and the lasting impact he had on all those fortunate enough to know him.
The family will receive friends at the Burke Funeral Home (613-968-6968), 150 Church Street, Belleville on Saturday January 10th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Jim’s memory.
