It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gisela Sigrid Hintze, loving and devoted mother to son, Doug, and daughter-in-law, Rachel.
Gisela was born in 1932 in East Germany. She was displaced during WWII and immigrated to Canada in 1953 with her husband Heinz. One of her first jobs in Toronto was with a bank, where she had to “learn English fast” to accommodate the demanding clients.
Settling in Warkworth in 1967, Gisela worked many jobs including seamstress, where she made wedding dresses and Hallowe’en costumes for many residents. She also owned the local restaurant on Main St. for a number of years. Legend has it, customers would line up outside her restaurant for her hot roast beef sandwiches and coconut cream pies.
Gisela was a hard worker throughout her life, and spent her free time gardening, sewing, reading, and drinking coffee all day.
Gisela’s health started to decline in her 80s. She broke her hip in September 2019 but still danced with her son at his wedding in Toronto one month later; a perfect representation of her willpower and spirit.
Gisela passed away peacefully at the age of 92 with her son and daughter-in-law by her side. Predeceased by husband, Heinz, eight siblings, and nephew, Hansel.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Island Park and Campbellford Memorial Hospital, and her wonderful friends for all of their support throughout the years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 14 @ the Warkworth Legion, 1 -4pm.
