Forty-eight-year-old Mark Jenkin was last seen on Wednesday at approximately 10 a.m. around Park Crescent in Amherstview.

Jenkin is described as 5’10” with a medium build.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) says 69-year-old Kenneth Irwin died on Tuesday of apparent natural causes.

At the time of death, the inmate had been serving a sentence of three years, six months and three days since August 8, 2025.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, CSC will review the circumstances.

CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.

During Wednesday’s council meeting, councillors reviewed a report on the committee, formed each election year to handle complaints about candidates’ campaign finances. The committee will hear complaints if a candidate has violated the elections act and determine if further investigation is needed.

The committee is usually formed for each municipal election cycle in partnership with Prince Edward County, Belleville, the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board, and the Algonquin and Lakeshore District School Board. The members of the committee serve for the entire term of the elected officials.

Council voted to approve forming the committee, with no debate.

During Wednesday’s council meeting, councillors reviewed a pair of requests from developers to extend deadlines to submit for building permits before development charges are set to increase in July.

The developments impacted are at 47 Stella Crescent and 2 Fourth Avenue in Trenton. In both cases, extensions were requested because developers claimed higher rates would impact the feasibility of the projects.

Council briefly considered the requests and Councillor Don Kuntze attempted to put forward a motion to have staff look into providing a potential extension, however, he was unable to get a seconder.

Both requests were received by council, with no action taken.

During Wednesday’s council meeting, Councillor David O’Neil raised concerns that the contract for Canada Day fireworks was given to a non-local company, when a local company was an option. He was concerned that the municipality was not buying local, despite efforts to do so.

While discussing the tender, it was stated that the purchasing policy requires they go with the lowest bidder, which can result in local companies being outbid.

Councillor O’Neil put forward a motion to have municipal staff prepare a pair of reports to council. The first report would be to cover the process that led to the firework tender being awarded, and a second regarding potential amendments to the policy to allow local companies to be chosen even if they aren’t the lowest bid.

That motion passed after brief debate.

Previously, the trail had been limited to pedestrian traffic only, however, during Wednesday’s council meeting, the idea of opening a segment of the trail between North Trent Street and Glen Ross to vehicles was considered.

While discussing the motion, it was determined that public consultation was needed before they could proceed, and council moved to direct staff to hold public consultations regarding the trail.

The motion passed unanimously.

The public consultation centres will be held at the Parkdale Community Centre on Wednesday, April 22, and Thursday, April 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. Residents will be able to vote on their favourite playground design proposals and provide their input on what sports they would like to see included in the multi-use court. The project team, playground and sport court vendors will be on site to answer any questions.

Operation BOXTOP is traditionally carried out twice a year in the spring and fall. The fall mission primarily transports dry goods to the station whereas the spring mission focuses on replenishing the CFS Alert’s fuel stores.

This edition of Op BOXTOP is unique, as it will have No. 99 Squadron from the Royal Air Force supporting the Royal Canadian Air Force’s replenishment objectives as part of their own exercise, Ex POLAR PUMA, from April 10 to April 18. As part of this exercise, the RAF will deploy a RAF C17 running resupply missions to CFS Alert, with RAF personnel also observing missions from the ground at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, and CFS Alert, supporting training and development of RAF capabilities in the Arctic.

As a continuation of both countries’ commitment to defence and interoperability, mixed crews of RAF and RCAF personnel will conduct missions together, contributing to the operational viability, sovereignty, and security of these remote regions. Working together as an integrated crew allows for collaboration and further refines the skills of personnel creating a more capable air mobility asset.

Last year, members from the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) 36 Squadron participated in Op BOXTOP, gaining experience in cold-weather take-off and landing performance, cold-weather maintenance activities, and forward operating base considerations in an Arctic environment, which helped the RAAF develop capabilities for providing contingencies in Antarctic operations. Operations such as Op BOXTOP provide the opportunity for the RCAF to work alongside allies and share their expertise in polar operations.

The CC177 made its inaugural landing at CFS Alert on April 14, 2010 and has been routinely flying into the northernmost permanently-inhabited place in the world ever since.

Op BOXTOP dates back to the 1950s. Using United States Space Force’s Pituffik Space Base in Greenland as a staging point, Canada’s Air Force runs day and night flying fuel and supplies to the station during the operation. Over the last 20 years, the mission has averaged an annual delivery of approximately 650,000 pounds of dry goods and 1.5 million litres of fuel into CFS Alert. Op BOXTOP is expected to be completed on April 25, 2026

The week of Monday March 30, 2026, through to Sunday April 5, 2026, Peterborough County OPP focused additional attention on distracted driving in an effort to reduce opportunities for collisions within the community. During the week, there were 49 distracted driving charges laid.

Under section 78.1(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) the actual wording states, “No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway while holding or using a hand held wireless communication device or other prescribed device.”  Courts have clarified that merely holding the device is sufficient for the charge and just because you may be stopped at a traffic light, doesn’t make it okay to text. Using a hand-held device while driving is not a matter of convenience, it is a serious safety risk and a preventable cause of collisions.

The penalties for a first-time conviction include fines ranging from $615 to $1,000, three demerit points and a three-day suspension. For novice drivers, an immediate 30-day licence suspension for first conviction, 90-day suspension for second conviction, and licence cancellation for a third conviction are imposed. These penalties can have serious consequences on an individual, but not nearly as serious as the affects of a collision caused by a distracted driver.

Distracted driving is entirely preventable. Put the phone away, keep your eyes on the road, and your hands on the wheel. Ontario Provincial Police urge every driver to make safe choices that protect themselves and others-because one moment of distraction can change lives forever.

Fire crews responded to the blaze on 677 Front Street at around 1 p.m.

Fire Chief John Whelan tells Quinte News that firefighters were able to quickly attack the blaze at the fourplex.

OPP, EMS and Hydro One responded.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
