Don Metzger says becoming the mayor of the City of Belleville has been a lifelong dream of his.
He appeared on the Lorne Brooker Show as part of the Meet the Candidates segment.
He is one of four candidates seeking the city’s top job in Monday’s municipal election.
Metzger has been in the automotive industry, plumbing and heating and has worked in non-profit housing.
Among the priorities for him are getting services to the Marshall Road area and the police budget.
“Of the 32,000 calls that went out, 70-80 per cent were non-violent. Every time an armed officer leaves the station, it’s $548 to the city. So I’d like to see a way we could maybe use some of the non-profits to handle the non-violent calls and maybe we could use the rest of the budget to patrol Ward 2 which there seems to be some issues out that way.”
As mayor, Metzger also says he would give back 20 per cent of his salary to the community such as the food bank or to focus on issues like homelessness.
He adds he will always be willing to listen to what people have to say.
“My door will always be open to anybody, young or old, it doesn’t matter. I’m open to listening to what everybody has to say.”
