The province’s Special Investigations Unit has released a statement about Sunday night’s gunfire near a Belleville synagogue.
The investigation is in its early stages but the SIU says a Belleville Police Service officer was near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue near Victoria and Bleecker avenues around 7 p.m. when there was an exchange of gunfire involving a 29-year-old man armed with a shotgun.

The man and one officer suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital.
The officer is in critical-stable condition and the man is in life-threatening condition.
Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
