Mayoral candidate for the City of Quinte West, Zack Card, was the first guest for the Meet The Candidates segment on The Lorne Brooker Show on 800 CJBQ on Friday.
Card was asked how his experience at city council made him want to run for mayor.
He said that he feels the combination of his experience in both the private sector as well as in municipal politics helps make him the best candidate.
“My vision is really, I think, resonating with folks in the community in terms of modernizing, upgrading technology to get more value from existing tax dollars, the fiscal challenges and the affordability crisis that we have, has to be tackled. I think it has to be the number one focus every day for the next council,” Card said on The Lorne Brooker Show.
“I think that my skill set and my history and my abilities – I think that I’m the best one to kind of tackle and run with the ball on that.”
During the call-in segment of the show, Card was asked about strong mayor powers and if he would use them.
Card said that the bar to use the powers is “extraordinarily high.”
“Making any decision to utilize those (powers), I would understand with open eyes that it can only have negative ramifications with the cohesion of council and their ability to do the people’s work going forward after that,” Card said.
“So I see that as a sort of complete last resort that should not be used in any sort of regular basis or willy-nilly way because it is not a good tool and I don’t agree with it.”
