Samuel “Sam” Loghrin passed away peacefully after a full day’s work at his home on July 14, 2026 at the age of 74. He was born on December 27, 1951, in Stratford, Ontario, to the late Robert (Harry) and Alexina (Bess) Loghrin.
Sam attended the University of Guelph, where he studied Civil Engineering and met the love of his life, Mary. Together they adventured throughout Southwestern Ontario, Alberta, and Thunder Bay before settling on their farm near Marlbank, Ontario, in 1982.
An entrepreneur at heart, Sam operated a variety of businesses over his lifetime, including: construction, plastics and plexiglass manufacturing, firewood sales, farming, and local farm machinery repair. He possessed an endless curiosity about how things worked and took great satisfaction in solving problems.
A gifted craftsman, Sam found joy in reviving and experimenting with old-time creations, including cant hooks, axe handles, and a variety of unique farm machinery and tools. He was endlessly resourceful—a tinkerer who embraced self-reliance through home energy generation experiments, firewood, homesteading, restoring tractors, maintaining equipment, managing the woodlot, or dreaming up his next project.
Sam was well known in the Marlbank community, from his time helping neighbours bailing their hay, ploughing and combining their fields and sanding their driveways after winter storms. He could often be found dropping off a bag of potatoes, or simply stopping by to check in across Marlbank and area. For many, the heart of Sam’s home was the coffee table. Friends and neighbours knew they could stop in for a hot cup of coffee and leave having learned something new, heard a memorable story, or enjoyed a hearty laugh.
Sam had a deep love for ‘pets’ and cared equally for dogs, cats, and cows alike. He took immense pride in stewarding his land, caring for the farm and woodlot.
Sam will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary, and his children, William (Lacey), Edward (Carla), and Helen (Ryan). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Cole, Hannah, Cameron, Sarah, and Ben. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings Thomas, Elizabeth, William, Jane, Donald, and Marion. He was predeceased by his brother Alexander and parents.
In keeping with Sam’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. The family hopes to gather with friends and neighbours this fall to celebrate his life and to say thank you. Online condolences can be shared at www.BurkeFuneral.ca
