Bancroft’s overnight warming centre is shifting its operating model, to allow for overnight shelter year-round.
The shift in operations was discussed during Thursday’s meeting of Hastings County Council, after a report on the centre from the community and human services committee.
The shelter was previously approved to continue operations past the usual March 31 cut off for warming centres. With the site remaining open, usage has remained steady with people continuing to use the shelter into the spring season.
With the warming season over, the shelter has moved to focus on providing overnight sleeping space for those experiencing homelessness. Guests are required to check in by 11 p.m., after which the doors close for the night.
Costs for operating the shelter throughout the year were previously budgeted for, as part of the homelessness prevention program.
