The famous Canadian Snowbirds aerial team are being temporarily grounded.
The nine-jet squadron will have their classic CT114 Tutor jets replaced with the CT157Siskin-Two planes.
Defence Minister David McGuinty announced the plan for a new fleet while at the team’s home base at 15 Wing Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan.
“We will procure the CT-157 Syscon 2, the Pilatus PC-21, as the future aircraft for the Snowbirds. It, too, will serve as both a trainer and air demonstration aircraft.”

“Through the future aircraft training program, Canada is making one of the most significant investments in military aviation training in history. The program represents more than $9.4 billion in long-term investment, and will modernize how the next generation of Royal Canadian Air Force personnel are trained.”
Saskatchewan Justice Minister Tim McLeod was asked about what happens to staff as a result of this change.
“Of course we’re concerned here. That was one of the questions that we have been pursuing a clear answer to, is what happens to the pilots, the technicians, all of the jobs that surround the Snowbirds fleet and squadron. We’ve been assured that efforts are being made to make sure that those individuals will stay right here in the community.”
Moose Jaw Mayor James Murdock says it was reassuring to hear the federal defense minister say the snowbirds will stay headquartered near the city.
“This really is the only community that they do belong in as their headquarters and to be based out of. The Snowbirds are very cherished here in our community and we appreciate everything that they do for our city of Moose Jaw.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney says the snowbirds are a part of Canada’s heritage.
“The planes, like many Canadians, have enjoyed the, demonstrations,of the Snowbirds over the years, absolutely extraordinary and a source of pride.”
Officials were unsure when the new planes will be in operation — only that they expect to be ready in the early 2030s.
The aerial acrobatic team has performed at 2,700 shows across North America since being formed in 1971.
