Heaven grew a little brighter with the passing of Judith Belle Chalmers on May 10, 2026. Judy passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Quinte HealthCare in her 80th year.
Judy is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 59 years David Chalmers. David and Judy met in elementary school, dated through high school and soon after decided life would be better together and married in 1967. Through every season of life, including Judy’s courageous battle with breast cancer, and the lasting effects of treatment, David remained by her side.
Judy was the adored sister to Helen (Allan) Morton, Peter (Dianne) Ackerman. Dear sister-in-law to Ross (Judy) Chalmers, Haig Chalmers, Heather Chalmers and Sid Wilkinson.
Judy is now reunited with those that predeceased her: her beloved parents, Gerald and Ruth Ackerman, sister Carol and nephew Fred.
Known affectionately as “Aunt Jud” she will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews. Jeff (Anne) Morton, Jennifer (Brad) Brooks, Kate (James) Carr, Phillip (Kate) Chalmers, Jessica (Scott) Chapman, Daniel Ackerman and Ellen Wilkinson as well as many great nieces and nephews. Though Judy had no children of her own she embraced the role of “cool aunt” with pride. She was often described as “like a mom but only fun.” Many of the memories created with Aunt Judy ended with “ok, but we can’t tell your parents…”
Judy devoted her life to caring for others as a registered nurse at Belleville General Hospital. Graduating in 1968 she spent most of her nursing career working in the operating room until she retired in 2002. Judy formed countless lifelong friendships through her work at BGH, many of whom she kept in touch with through Pathfinders and “the old girl’s luncheon”
After retirement Judy’s goal was to spend as much time as possible at the cottage. Papineau lake was Judy’s happy place. According to her, there was never a bad day if you were at the cottage. Many great memories were made on Papineau with friends while listening to Brooks and Dunn and enjoying a little Absolute.
Friends and family are invited to gather in celebration of Judy’s life on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Burke Funeral Home, 150 Church Street, Belleville. Visitation will take place from 10 – 11am with a memorial service and luncheon to follow immediately after.
In lieu of flowers, donations to BGH Dr. Douglas A Macintosh Cancer Clinic, a cause close to Judy’s heart, would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences at www.BurkeFuneral.ca
