Dr. William “Bill” Cunningham passed away peacefully on April 10th, 2026 surrounded by family.
Bill was born on July 8,1936 in Edinburgh, Scotland where he established a successful career as a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry at Heriot Watt University. With his young family, he immigrated to Canada in 1972. After completing his medical degree at Queen’s University, Kingston, he established a large medical practice in Belleville and Roslin, where he served as a dedicated and compassionate family physician to his patients for 38 years. Bill always kept a proud connection to Scotland, leading the Belleville Scottish Country Dance Society and representing Scotland in his many contributions to the Belleville community.
Bill will be missed by his wife Janice, children Jane (Ron), Keith (Heather), and Mark (Laura), grandchildren Kate, Fraser, Michael, Gavin, Aidan, Nora, Ailin, great-grandson Liam and Jack and Violet.
Bill leaves a legacy as a teacher, researcher and lifelong learner, fearlessly taking on any adventure or challenge, a spirit that shaped who he was as a husband, father, grandfather, and doctor
The family welcomes you to pay your respects at Burke Funeral Home Friday April 17th, 4:00-6:00 pm. Donations are appreciated to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or Belleville General Hospital Foundation.
