James “Jim” Philip Colin Higgs, passed away on March 28, 2026, in his 77th year, at Hospice Quinte in Belleville after a short battle with cancer. Born August 2, 1949 in Ulverton, Quebec, Jim will be remembered as a warm, witty man whose hijinks and laughter could fill a room— especially in his cherished role as a grandfather, father, husband, and friend.
Jim grew up in Kemptville with sisters Elizabeth and Nancy, then attended Algonquin College for Business. He was known in his younger days for being a bit of a rascal, never far from a joke or a bit of harmless trouble—yet somehow, Jim always landed on his feet.
Beyond his deep love and pride in his family, he had a passion for antique cars, world history, and crime novels, and was an enthusiastic fan of the Blue Jays and live theatre. Jim was an active member of Westminster United Church and loved his recent travels with UW friends. Known recently for his retirement career as a medical staff driver for Burke, he also had careers in banking, retail at S&R, service advisor & parts driver.
Jim was predeceased in 2012 by his first wife and high school sweetheart, Janet Higgs (née Kerr), his partner of 45 years. Together, they shared a deep and enduring love that remained strong through all of life’s seasons.
Beloved by his daughters, Joanna (Andrew Park) and Jennifer (Brad Ford). Proud Grandpa to Aaron, Mitchell, Nate and Ella.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Kathryn Crawford Higgs, who brought companionship, care, and happiness to his later years, and who stood by his side with unwavering love.
Also lovingly remembered by Tim Crawford (Sarah) and Gabrielle (Adam Gee). Grandpa Jim to James and Alexander, and Emelia and Abigail.
Visitation is Friday April 10, 5-8 pm at Burke Funeral Home 150 Church St., Belleville. Funeral Saturday April 11, 11am (Visitation 10am) at Westminster United Church 1199 Wallbridge Loyalist Rd in Belleville. Donations in lieu of flowers to Sidney Westminster United Church or Hospice Quinte.
