Election signage was once again a topic of discussion at Shire Hall.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, council revisited a discussion from a previous committee of the whole meeting, where a bylaw regulating the placement of the signs was discussed, and recommended to council to be passed.
The part of the bylaw that came under scrutiny was the restriction that election signs could not be posted before the end of the nomination period on August 24th. Councillor Brad Nieman raised concerns that it was too restrictive, and might unfairly benefit incumbents who have greater recognition in the community. He suggested an amendment that candidates should be allowed to put signs up once they’d registered during the nomination period, beginning in May.
The proposed amendment passed, and the bylaw was passed as amended.
