Everyone knows we had a tougher winter than usual this year and it had a very noticeable effect on local hospitals.
President and CEO of Quinte Health Stacey Daub told the board of directors on Tuesday that in January, medicine patient volumes, mainly due to respiratory illness, averaged 251, well over 198, the number of beds funded by the provincial government.
Daub says the medical staff is already planning for the next winter season and the situation is improving.
“With community partners starting to build up primary care in our communities, they’re starting to offer respiratory clinics and I think we’re going to see that grow over time. Prince Edward County held respiratory clinics so people could go there instead of the hospital so people are getting timely treatment and I think the partnership activity in our communities continues to grow and grow.”
Daub adds the level of coordination among various community healthcare providers has never been so good and planning for improvements is ongoing.
