Peterborough OPP are currently investigating another scam that has been reported in Douro-Dummer Township.
On March 13, 2026, Peterborough County OPP received a call from an individual who had become a victim in a recent scam. On March 11, 2026, the victim received a call from someone who they believed to be from their bank. The victim was advised that their credit card had been fraudulently used in another province. The victim was then instructed to take both their credit card and debit card, place them in an envelope and were provided with a reference number to write on the envelope. They were then instructed to leave the envelope in a location where it would be collected and used as part of the bank’s investigation. At approximately 11:30 p.m., an individual attended the residence and picked up the envelope.
The following day, the victim was contacted again by the same person and was asked various personal questions that they believed were needed as part of the bank’s investigation. It was later discovered that over $14,000 had been transferred from the victim’s account.
A similar incident was reported on March 5, 2026, when the individual reported receiving a call from someone claiming to be from their bank and convinced them to cut up their cards and told them they would send a representative to pick them up. An individual attended their residence, picked up the cut-up cards and left. The complainant called their bank afterwards after figuring out it was a scam and had all the cards cancelled. Fortunately, they were able to avoid losing their savings.
Here’s some things to remember…
- Don’t trust caller ID as it can be spoofed to look like it’s your bank.
- No bank will ever ask for your card/chip or send someone to pick it up.
- If you get a call like this, hang up and call the bank using the phone number provided on the back of your card.
- The bank is not going to ask you to provide your PIN or personal information over the phone.
