Smith, Dennis Wayne (Retired Senior Captain – Quinte West Fire Department, Station 1)…passed away peacefully with family by his side at Belleville General Hospital on Thursday February 26th, 2026 in his 85th year. Most beloved husband of Carole (Ellis) for 66 years. Proud father of Lori Smith and Steve Smith & his wife Christine. Dearly loved Poppa Dennis to Jessie (Stephane), Taylor Hyatt, Stephanie (Sean) and Great Poppa to Wesley, Brooks, Jaxx, and Casey. Dennis will be fondly remembered by his cousin Sharon Carson (Lyle), his nephew Bruce Clarke and his niece Tracy Clarke and their families, his many friends and Brother Firefighters. Predeceased by his parents Estelle (Dinelle) & Mervin Smith, mother in law Betty (Ward) & father in law Cecil Ellis, his sister in law Dianne Briggs (Ernie) and baby granddaughter Emily Hyatt. Dad was very dedicated to his family, friends and community. He could often be found coaching, managing, refereeing and fundraising. Whether it was hockey, ball, figure skating or soccer, he always worked around our schedules. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing cards, but most of all he loved being with Carole around his kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family always came first. The family would like to sincerely thank all the staff on Quinte 5 for their excellent care, support, kindness and compassion shown to our dad. A very special thank you to Dr. Leandra Grieve-Elgin. Visitation will be held at Weaver – East, 29 Bay St., Trenton on Friday March 13th from 11:00am – 1:00pm, followed by a funeral ceremony at 1:00pm. Following the service, everyone is welcome to a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion Trenton Branch #110, Quinte St., Trenton.
