Quinte West’s Trennt Michaud and Team Canada finished fifth on Sunday at the Olympic games in Italy.
It was in the team event, which included a long and short pairs program, ice dance, men’s and women’s categories.
Early Monday morning (Central Europe Time), Michaud chatted with Quinte News, while sitting below the Olympic rings.
Michaud says there was a sense of calm over the whole event.
“Pretty surreal. We’ve been very well prepared coming into this event. It’s the best of the best and when people are skating great, we love to skate great too. The energy in the building is something different and something special and you want to put your best foot forward. Sometimes that’s helpful to be a little more focused and as soon as the music plays some of that noise goes away and it’s just the two of us out there and that’s what it felt like today which is really, really, fun.”
There are good and bad things about the team event, but there is a lot more you cannot do anything about.
“You can only control what you can control and for us that’s your performance. In the short program, we thought we skated pretty well. We made a couple little errors that cost us some points, but we were still in a good place being fourth after the short. Satisfied. We took that energy into today (Sunday) and we laid down a really great program today which we were very proud of.”
They will now have about a week off to prepare for the pairs event which begins on the weekend.
“It’s really exciting to be able to get our toes wet with the team event and skate pretty well and then being able to take what was good from that and try to improve on it and fine tune some things over the next week.”
