The MP for Hastings-Lennox and Addington-Tyendinaga has returned from a three-day trip to Greenland.
Shelby Kramp-Neuman was with Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand in the capital of Nuuk for a ceremonial opening of a consulate office on Friday.
Kramp-Neuman spoke to Quinte News about the shared interests of Canada and Denmark, the country that has rights over the autonomous territory.
“We normally view trade and political relationships in an east/west sort of lens, but Canada and Denmark are both Arctic nations. With China increasing their presence in the Arctic and the Russians ever so present, our response to these threats need to be coordinated and united on both military and an economic scale.”
She adds that both sides of the floor (House of Commons) need to work together on issues that strengthen Canada’s position internationally.
“Diplomacy is about discretion and sometimes it’s beneficial to show Canadians just a glimpse of behind the scenes, so that they can see that the sparring in Question Period is far from defining the mood and relationships in Ottawa.”
