Edward Harry Emerson Bates, age 84 years of Carrying Place, ON, passed away on January 12, 2026. A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, January 17, 2026 from 11am-2pm at 202 Parkview Road, Carrying Place, ON.
Edward was born in Fort William Ontario in 1941 to Emerson and Margaret (nee Miller) Bates, the eldest of eight children. Edward married his first wife Joan in 1963 and had three children. Edward was beloved to his second wife, Lorraine for 41 years. Together they had a blended family of 6 children; Lauralee (nee Bates), Shelley (nee Bates), Lawrence Aho, Allan Bates, James Aho, and Laila Aho.
Edward excelled as a manager for various companies over his working career but his passion was his family and the joy of engaging in his many talented and skilled pastimes. Ed and Lorraine were competitive 5-pin bowler’s for many decades, still enjoying the sport to the present. Edward was a provincial champion master 5-pin bowler. Edward has had a strong connection and appreciation for nature, the outdoors and all things structural (especially purposefully designed with duct tape and tie wraps) and mechanical. He passed these things on through to his children and grandchildren. Edward never rested in retirement, Lorraine and he remained very active through assisting their children with many, many building projects. Edward found his inner artist in his golden years, spending hour upon hour doing paint by number or whittling wood into folk art creations.
Edward was predeceased by both parents, his younger sister, Margo Gouthro; nieces, Shannon and Cindy and nephews, Russell, Curtis. Edward was loved and cherished greatly and will be sorrowfully and deeply missed by those who survive him. In legacy: his wife, Lorraine (nee L’Arrivee); Children: Lauralee (Peter) Merkley, Shelley (Brent) Ellis, Lawrence (Michelle) Aho, Allan Bates, James (Dawn) Aho and Laila (Allan Brown) Aho; siblings: Linda (Doug) Mosher, Donald (Donna) Bates, Ronald (Debbie) Bates, Beverly (Shane) Ferguson , Keith (Kathleen) Bates and Norman Bates; 14 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Edward’s four legged friend, Hunter, will be lonely for his daily play of “kick and fetch the ball”.
The family of Edward wishes to extend our sincere thank you’s to the ER staff of Quinte Health Trenton Memorial Hospital for their dedicated care, efforts and support.
We also thank all of our friends and extended family for the many, many wishes of condolences and support in these sorrowful times. Online guest book, memories and condolences may be shared at www.weaverfuneralhomes.com
