Looking ahead: Municipality of Tweed

Getting a budget for 2026 ready and approved will be a big job for local councils throughout the Quinte region and it will be no different in the Municipality of Tweed.

Mayor Don DeGenova has a goal in mind.

“My goal is of course to get it below double digits this year–it may be high single digits–but that is my goal. That is of course if we can get
some funding to help us through some of these difficult times.”

However, DeGenova tells Quinte News a consultant has recommended council dedicate a six per cent tax increase for 10 years dedicated to capital spending only.

“So I’m not sure if we’ll start with six or if we’ll start with four but there is definitely going to be a commitment by this council and hoping that each
subsequent council will comply and put aside a set amount every year.”

The dedicated capital levy over 10 years would help Tweed catch up on necessary spending on roads and bridges, water/sewer projects and other infrastructure needs.

Meanwhile, Tweed council is expecting to receive a development charges study in 2026 which could lead to the implementation of such charges in the future.

Tweed is currently one of the few municipalities in the area without development charges.

And the basics, roads and bridges, will be a focus in the Municipality of Tweed in 2026.

“Next year we’re hoping to install two bridges, the first definitely being Kinmond, and after that we are definitely moving on half of Flinton Road–we’re definitely focused on getting that one done.”

Tweed council has applied to senior government for funding to cover most of the cost of upgrading all of Flinton Road between County Road 41 and Highway.

Also a second down payment of $450,000 will be made on a new fire truck which is expected to be delivered in 2027.
