Quinte News spoke with Northumberland-Clarke MP Philip Lawrence about the year that’s been.
The year of 2025 wasn’t without challenges, with MP Lawrence citing the ongoing trade war as a persistent problem for his constituents.
“In our riding, we have a number of small manufacturers. During the summer, I took the opportunity to do a tour and talk to many of the owners or the operators of those manufacturers, and they were all hurting, even if the tariffs didn’t hit them directly, because of the uncertainty the tariffs caused,” said MP Lawrence.
The year also had some major successes. MP Lawrence said that while people are still struggling, he sees people showing incredible generosity across his riding.
“What I’ve seen, and continue to see, is that people continue to come together for our community whatever the cause be,” said MP Lawrence. “Whether it be a new hospice coming up in Newcastle, or various projects where they engage in going to help individuals. People are always there and always willing.”
He said people have made and continue to make large donations to programs that help members of their community in need.
