A Prince Edward County woman is competing in the quarterfinals of a national style competition.
Nicole Conley is competing in the Style Icon competition, for a chance at a grand prize including $20,000. Contestants showcase their unique style in an effort to impress voters and earn enough votes to move on to the next stage.
The competition is being held in support of the Elton John Aids Foundation, which has raised over $650,000 to provide HIV testing and care to vulnerable communities around the world.
In an interview with Quinte news, she said that she entered the competition as a way to build herself up and push beyond her comfort zone while supporting a good cause.
“I suffered through some trauma and some depression,” said Conley. “I had to rebuild myself from the ground up, and I was able to kind of do that with style and just kind of making myself look good, which then felt good about myself.”
Conley is currently in the quarter finals of the competition, with voting open until Thursday for her to gather the votes needed to make it into the semi-finals. She had placed high in the previous stages, but now the pressure is on as the competition narrows.
“It’s really made me open up and be real with myself as well and share my story in a way that’s actually making an impact,” said Conley. “I’m just really grateful to have the opportunity and the privilege to be a part of something like this.”
