Prince Edward County is updating their taxi by-laws.
During the Thursday meeting of Committee of the Whole, the committee reviewed a proposed update to the county’s taxi by-laws.
The new by-law was developed by municipal staff with consultation from the operating taxi companies.
Some measures were put in place to protect local operators from larger companies moving in. Under the new by-law, taxi operators must have an address either in the county or a neighbouring municipality. A limit of 30 taxi licences was retained from the previous by-law, with priority for companies that already operate taxis in Prince Edward County when new licences are issued or renewed.
The new by-law also includes a maximum fare chart, with flat rates between Picton and several destinations, along with a per kilometre rate of $1.60.
During discussion of the new rates, Councillor Brad Nieman proposed an amendment to have the maximum fares evaluated before the by-law goes before council for final approval, as he discovered some inconsistencies with how some destinations were priced.
“So you go into Waupoos Marina, it’s $61 or $65 you go to the Waupoos Winery, it’s $60 where you’re travelling seven kilometres further,” said Councillor Nieman. “I just want to make sure it’s right.”
The amendment passed, and the new by-law was approved as amended. The by-law will appear before county council at a future meeting for final approval.
