Cobourg Police Service (CPS) has concluded its Fall Selective TrafficEnforcement Project (STEP), which focused on promoting safe driving habits and pedestrian awareness as daylight hours shorten and weather conditions shift into fall.
Throughout October, CPS officers conducted targeted enforcement, emphasizing the importance of adapting driving behaviour to seasonal changes, including reduced visibility, increased wet or slippery roads, and increased pedestrian activity near schools and residential zones.
This month, officers issued 126 Provincial Offence Notices for various Highway Traffic Act offences including:
• Speeding, driving while under suspension, failing to stop at red light, failing to stop for school bus, and using hand-held device
• 14 Provincial Offence Notices for various insurance-related offences
• One driver charged with operation while prohibited
• One driver charged with refusal of demand, which carries a 90-day licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impound.
Many of these infractions not only result in large fines and other consequences but also pose serious safety risks, especially during the fall, when seasonal hazards like slippery leaves, sun glare, and fog demand extra caution.
Stay alert, slow down, and drive safely.
