A Frankford man who was charged with attempted murder after a shooting in 2024 has been found not criminally responsible by the courts.
Mitchell Barink, 27 years old at the time of the shooting, plead that he was not criminally responsible for the incident due to suffering from a mental disorder.
On Thursday, during a hearing, the Ontario Court of Justice accepted his plea. Based on psychiatric evaluations done of Barnik, the crown accepted that a finding of not criminally responsible was appropriate under the criminal code. During the hearing, victim impact statements from the victim, and several of their family members were heard.
Barnik is to be held in custody, in a psychiatric facility, and will appear before the Ontario Review Board for a disposition hearing within 45 days. All other charges against him were dropped.
