After a few weeks delay in order to receive more information, Belleville council is expected to make a decision on
parking at its meeting Monday.
Staff is suggesting council accept the report first seen in early August that recommended implementing Phase 1
of a three-phase parking modernization plan that would see increased fines for parking infractions, increases in daily
parking permit fees and an increase in hourly meter rates to $1.50 from the current one dollar.
Before making a decision on the recommendation, council will see a consultant’s report on what would happen
if the city offered free on-street parking and in lots in the Downtown District.
If that were to occur the consultants say about $800,000 a year would have to come from the tax base due to
a drop in revenue from permit sales and parking fines.
