Northumberland OPP are providing clarification in light of what the detachment calls misinformation currently circulating on social media.
Tuesday, shortly before 10 p.m., officers responded to a report of an individual trespassing on residential property on County Road 45 in Roseneath.
Police located a person matching the description on County Road 45 and took them into custody at around 11:45 p.m.
As a result, Joshua Smoke (21) from Roseneath, has been charged with:
– Trespassing at night
– Mischief under $5,000
Around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday morning, officers responded to a report of what was believed to be possible gunshots in the area of Macklin Road and County Road 45.
Officers patrolled the area, but no further sounds were heard, and no evidence of gunfire was located though the incident remains under investigaton.
Northumberland OPP have been made aware of social media reports that officers were involved in a firearms incident and that one person was shot and taken into custody.
Police say this information is false and it appears to stem from a misunderstanding or confusion of the two separate incidents described above.
OPP remind the public to rely on verified sources for accurate information and to be cautious of unverified reports circulating online.
Police note that the arrest made on Tuesday night is not connected to the recent break-and-enter investigations which are ongoing.
