As food banks for humans see rising usage, the Quinte region is also seeing it’s first food bank for pets.
The Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward is officially launching HSHPE Pet Food Bank at their shelter, located at 34 Wallbridge-Loyalist Road in Belleville.
The pet food bank will open on Saturday, October 4th.
The humane society estimates over 50,000 pets live within Hastings and Prince Edward counties, and a leading cause of pet surrenders is the rising costs associated with properly feeding and caring for them.
“This initiative really captures what HSHPE is all about, caring for pets and the people who love them,” said Melanie Cressman, Executive Director of HSHPE. “We couldn’t do this without the continued generosity of our donors, suppliers, and supporters who make it possible. We are truly connected by compassion.”
Families in need of assistance can contact the HSHPE shelter at 613-968-4673 or visit their website here.
Availability of pet food depends on donations, and extra supplies are shared with families whenever possible.
