Cobourg Police Service is alerting residents to a potential phone scam circulating where the scammer poses as a local emergency service.
A resident reported receiving a call from an individual claiming to represent the Cobourg Fire Department, requesting a $1,000 donation and soliciting personal information.
When the resident asked for the donation request to be sent by mail, the caller became belligerent and abruptly ended the call.
The phone number provided by the resident traces back to the Canadian Firefighter Curling Association.
Emergency services will never solicit donations or money over the phone, and it has been confirmed that neither
does the Canadian Firefighter Curling Association.
Cobourg Police Service reminds residents:
• Do not provide personal or financial information over the phone to unknown callers.
• Verify any donation requests directly with the organization.
• Report suspicious calls to police immediately.
If you have been a victim of an investment scam, report the incident to the police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
