The City of Belleville has announced that another new doctor has been signed through Belleville’s Family Physician Recruitment Program.
Dr. Anuja Ashok is currently completing her residency training at Queen’s University and is expected to start practising medicine in Belleville as early as the fall of 2027.
Her contract was approved by council at its meeting on Monday.
“I have had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Ashok and her husband,” said Mayor Neil Ellis in a release.
“Not only will she be a terrific doctor, but together they will be a wonderful addition to our city. Council and the community are very lucky Dr. Ashok has chosen Belleville as her new home.”
Dr. Ashok also spoke about her signing.
“I am honoured to serve the people of Belleville and grateful for this welcoming community,” said Dr. Ashok.
“I look forward to contributing to its well-being as we make Belleville our home.”
While healthcare and physician recruitment are not municipal responsibilities, the City of Belleville has recruited more than 60 physicians and eight nurse practitioners.
The program has been mainly funded by the dividends the city receives as a shareholder of Elexicon Energy, and to date, over $9 million has been committed to attracting primary healthcare providers.
More information about the program can be found at the City of Belleville’s website.
