A restaurant owned by Belleville city councillor Kelly Henderson is offering what they are calling the “Speeder’s Special” to those with a speeding ticket from Belleville’s Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras.
In a post to Facebook, Quinte Restaurant says patrons can present their ticket and receive 10% off of any dinner entree for the months of September and October.
According to stipulations in the post, the ticket must be from Belleville and must be from the months of July through to October.
Henderson has been calling for the end of the cameras, with the exception of school zones, bringing forward a motion that ultimately failed to pass in the August 25 meeting of Belleville City Council.
At that meeting, Henderson said that “the current system generates revenue by penalizing predictable driver behaviour on poorly matched road design.”
Other councillors have argued that the cameras are not for revenue generation but rather for public safety.
The next meeting of Belleville council is on Monday, September 8 at 4 p.m. in council chambers.
