Crime was down in the Quinte region last year.
Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index (CSI) measures the volume and severity of police-reported crime in the country.
The index for the Belleville-Quinte West Census Metropolitan Area shows a four per cent decline in 2024 compared to the year before.
The local CMA includes Belleville, Quinte West, Deseronto-Tyendinaga and Stirling-Rawdon.
That’s right in line with the national number which also saw the CSI drop four per cent following three consecutive years of increases.
The provincial CSI fell one per cent.
The national 2024 CSI is 34 per cent lower than its peak in 1998 which was the first year CSI data was available.
Statscan reports non-violent crime had a significant impact on the overall decline in the national CSI, dropping six per cent from 2023.
The Non-violent CSI includes crimes like property and drug offences.
