One Prince Edward County councillor is set to bring a motion to their next council meeting, calling on council to reject strong mayor powers and ask that the province remove them.
Councillor Englesdorfer is bringing forward the motion, to the upcoming meeting on Tuesday.
In the motion, Englesdorfer says the strong mayor powers violate the principles of democracy, and undermine the role of council in decision making.
He also says that while the legislation was meant to speed up housing development, there’s no evidence that the powers have impacted housing development.
If the motion passes, it will call on the province to rescind the powers, and copies of the motion will be sent to Premier Doug Ford, Bay of Quinte MPP Tyler Allsopp, and the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
