Prince Edward County Council has been discussing new asset management plans, during a council and staff working session on Thursday.
This is the second of three planned working sessions. During these sessions no new decisions are made officially, but council members and staff can speak in depth about the asset management plan and how to approach it before a decision is made at a later meeting.
Part of the Thursday meeting was devoted to managing the county’s buildings. With many properties operated by the municipality across the area, staff and council considered options for managing the upkeep of the properties.
Three options were presented to council. The first option would be to invest in all public-facing buildings with priority given to critical maintenance, followed by accessibility updates and heritage. This option comes with an expected cost of $2,805,000 per year over the next 10 years.
Options were also presented where the municipality reduced the number of public-facing buildings in its care, with a 25% reduction expected to cost $2,344,000 annually and a 50% reduction expected to cost $1,883,000 annually.
Council and staff also discussed bridges and equipment owned by the municipality, which ranged from gear for firefighters, to IT equipment and computers.
