The Ontario Government is making a major investment in new CCTV cameras for Belleville, in an effort to combat gun and gang violence.
The $56,100 grant is coming from the Ontario Closed Circuit Television Grant Program and can be used to replace outdated cameras or install new cameras in areas where gun and gang violence are prevalent.
“It is important that we provide police services with modern tools that aid in crime prevention and investigation,” said Tyler Allsopp, MPP for Bay of Quinte. “This expansion of the closed-circuit camera system in Belleville will provide greater coverage to keep our community safe.”
Inspector Rene Aubertin, the Belleville Police Services’ Support Division Commander, said the funds would be used to expand CCTV coverage throughout the city.
Belleville police already operate a CCTV network which covers the downtown area.
The grant program funding can cover up to 50% of any projects it’s put towards.
