A letter from The Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward asking Belleville City Council for support in its attempt to address its deficit is being referred for discussion for the 2025 Operating Budget.
The Humane Society says in the letter that it is currently addressing a more than $304,000 deficit.
Currently, municipal funding is just under $51,000 but the annual costs including the shelter, spaying/neutering, and vaccinations for the animals are over $355,000.
The organization says it is asking for each year’s contract to be renewed based on the previous year’s numbers, creating a framework that it says equitably addresses changes in the animal population.
A copy of the letter can be found at the City of Belleville’s website.
