Belleville firefighters, police and ambulance responded to George Street just after 8 a.m. Sunday morning after an apartment caught fire.
Deputy Fire Chief Mark Shannon said that the apartment’s residents weren’t home when the fire began.
“Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a window, and evacuation of the building was in progress,” said Deputy Chief Shannon. “Firefighters made a quick entry and knocked down the apartment fire in minutes.”
One of the building’s residents, Seth Lightfoot, said he discovered the fire after smelling smoke but not finding a source in his own apartment.
“The apartment on the bottom floor, directly below mine had smoke billowing out the windows,” said Lightfoot. “I had knocked one of the windows out to let the smoke come out, and noticed I didn’t have anything to get back inside the building or my phone to call 911, so I screamed for somebody to do it. Somebody nearby did.”
Nobody was injured in the fire, and a two cats were rescued from the apartment. The source of the fire is still under investigation.
