Some moves are being made in the years-long saga of the former Intelligencer building in downtown Belleville.
An official with the city of Belleville tells Quinte News that some moves are being made by the present owner of the old newspaper building.
In a statement to Quinte Broadcasting on Wednesday, Director of Engineering and Development Services Stephen Ashton brought Quinte News up to date.
Ashton says, “There are environmental investigations occurring for the site to determine potential for redevelopment.”
These are being undertaken by the present owner of the building, Abdul Mian of Prime Canadian Properties.
The property owner has been issued several cleanup orders since 2011 when the Intelligencer newspaper vacated the building.
The owner had floated the idea of creating condominiums and later in 2020 the gutted structure was put up for sale for almost $2 million by local realtor Jamie Troke of Ekort Realty.
The building was not sold.
According to the Intelligencer, Prime Canadian Properties bought the building in 2008 for $425,000.
In January of 2023, the building owner told Quinte News there are plans for a joint venture with a big builder to construct 25 condo units, but would not comment further.
