Belleville council has signed off on a boundary change for Belleville Transit buses.
The commercial area just north of the 401 at Millennium Parkway and including the property where Walmart and other businesses are located has not been paying taxes for public transit service even though the buses have been stopping there.
Staff will prepare a by-law for approval by council stating that as of January 1, that section of the city be included in the transit service area and that property owners there start paying taxes for the service.
Properties affected will see an almost 5% property tax increase next year, while residents and businesses already paying for transit through taxes will see a small decrease.
