More homes are coming to Belleville.
Prince Edward Hastings Habitat for Humanity has opened up applications for eligible families to receive housing in a duplex they’re building on Sidney Street, near the corner of Bell Boulevard.
Those interested in applying to live there when the home is finished can apply on Habitat’s website here.
The two-unit structure began construction in September of last year, and both units will feature four bedrooms across two storeys and a basement.
The land for the project was previously donated to Habitat for Humanity by the City of Belleville.
Prince Edward Hastings Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Hazzem Koudsi, speaking at a press conference at the Habitat for Humanity Restore on Bell Boulevard, said that they plan to build more duplexes where they can, instead of just single family homes.
“Typically in the past they have built single-family dwellings on single pieces of land, no matter how big the piece of land was. Recently, just prior to my arrival, they had completed two duplexes in Trenton along Sidney Street. So the model was developed for us to continue with duplexes,” said Koudsi.
Habitat for Humanity is looking at building even denser home solutions in Belleville, and has plans to build over 60 units of condos on Dundas Street in Belleville at the former police station. Board of Directors Chair Kathryn Brown said that they’re still planning the structure and that they want to include different sizes of units and have green space still on the property.
The Children’s Safety Village, still on the former police station property, is planning to move to the site of the former Hillcrest Public School.
