The national, provincial and local unemployment rates all increased last month.
The local rose to 5% from 3.6% the month before.
The Belleville Census Metropolitan Area includes Belleville, Quinte West, Tyendinaga/Deseronto, and Stirling-Rawdon.
The national unemployment rate went up for the first time in seven months to 5.4% in August.
July’s rate was 4.9%.
Statistics Canada reports the economy lost 40,000 jobs last month, mainly in the public sector.
Ontario’s unemployment rate increased to 5.7% last month, up four tenths of a point from July.
