Bay of Quinte MP Ryan Williams says in the end, the results of Wednesday’s vote to remove Erin O’Toole as leader of Conservative Party of Canada, were not really surprising.
Seventy-three members of the Tory caucus voted to replace him while 45 endorsed O’Toole’s leadership.
Williams said it became clear during the meeting which way the vote would go.
“Not after hearing caucus. I think caucus was loud and clear that once, once he lost some support, I think it was hard to come back. I think, as a leader, you do have to hold the majority of support of your caucus. You need to ensure that when you’re speaking you’re speaking for them and he did not.”
Williams did not disclose to Quinte News how he voted.
“My stance was that we needed to get this over with. Not have any more dissension within the party. And now that it’s over with, we can go into a new leadership race to select the next leader for the Conservative Party.”
In a statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Williams thanked O’Toole and his family for their service and for his support during last year’s election campaign.
The Bay of Quinte MP also said the decision does not impact his work for the riding adding he will continue to work hard for all constituents in the Bay of Quinte region and for the people of Canada.
