Prince Edward County is moving ahead with plans for a Heritage Conservation District in Wellington.
At Thursday’s meeting, council’s Committee of the Whole received a study that determined a portion of Wellington merits the heritage designation because of its distinct urban character and historical associations.
Dr. Carl Bray of Bray Heritage which conducted the study, says the Heritage Conservation District would be divided into six character areas featuring attributes like unique street views, mature tree canopies lining streets and historical associations with important people and events.
“One of the aspects of Wellington is that it’s very much related to the water. And it’s a linear village, it’s grown up alongside of the shore, alongside a major through route and has its back to the farmland.”
Dr. Bray told council the heritage designation could be in place in nine to twelve months.
Council adopted all four recommendations of the study.
Among the next steps is the preparation of a Heritage Conservation District Plan that would lay out the policies and guidelines for the proposed Heritage Conservation District.
