An ambitious plan for the area around Belleville city hall could move forward in a preliminary way at city council’s meeting Monday afternoon.
Council is being asked to accept a long term development plan being put forward by consultants after months of consultation, involving experts and the general public.
Highlights of the plan include an unknown kind of redevelopment for the Memorial Arena, 4 storey residential buildings along the Moira River, an outdoor patio, some indoor market space in Market Square, and a parking garage south of the transit terminal.
In the short-term both the former Cabaret club and the Legion would be torn down for parking.
The consultants estimate there could be room for close to 2,400 more residential units in the centre of Belleville, most of them apartments or condominiums.
Council meets at 4 o’clock Monday at city hall.
